Austrian Research Landscape

Based on open data, we provide transparent information on the research activities and scientific impact of Austrian research organizations.

Bibliometric Rankings

Publication output and citation-impact indicators for Austrian universities and research organizations, using Leiden Ranking indicators.

Indicators
# Institution ROR Link Type P P — Publications Total number of publications of an institution. P top P top 1% The number of an institution’s publications that, compared with other publications in the same field and in the same year, belong to the top 1% most frequently cited. Pr top PP top 1% The proportion of an institution’s publications that, compared with other publications in the same field and in the same year, belong to the top 1% most frequently cited.

small sample — fewer than 30 publications; the proportion indicators (PP top %) are statistically unstable for such small samples.

Research fields

Research fields are classified using two sources: the OpenAlex classification, consisting of four broad research domains, and the field classification of the CWTS Leiden Ranking, comprising 20 macro fields derived from citation-based clustering of publications.

Classification
# Institution Type P P — Publications Number of the organisation’s publications in this field. P top 10% P top 10% Publications among the top 10% most cited in their field and year. P top 1% P top 1% Publications among the top 1% most cited in their field and year. PP top 10% PP top 10% Proportion of the organisation’s publications in the top 10%. Mean FWCI Mean FWCI Field-Weighted Citation Impact: average citations relative to the world average (1.0) for the same field and year.

small sample — fewer than 30 publications in this field; the proportion indicator (PP top 10%) is statistically unstable for such small samples.

Research subfields

A finer-grained view using the OpenAlex subfield classification — subfields grouped into 26 fields and 4 broad domains. Switch between an institution’s specialization profile across subfields and the leading Austrian institutions within a single subfield.

Spec. index Specialization index How concentrated the institution is in this subfield relative to the Austrian average. Above 1 means the subfield is over-represented in the institution’s output compared with the country as a whole.
